French writer Mercier (1740-1814) created the first utopian novel set in the remote future in 1770, and continued to embrace the theme in many other works. Forsstom, in his dissertation apparently for the University of Turko, Finland, investigates Mercier's image of an ideal society, and what components he considered contribute to the increase or decrease of human happiness.
