"Be it prologized that when the Storisende edition of the Biography of the Life of Manuel was prepared in 1927-30, then not merely was the complete text of the Biography rewritten, with the candors permissible in a limited edition, and considerable new matter added to most of the volumes, but also to each of the revised volumes was affixed its own special informal, and rather garrulous commentary in the form of an Author's Note. In this present book, thrift has collected these twenty commentaries, now 'out of print,' as being equally applicable to the unrevised text of the yet current Kalki edition ... For the rest, the chief purpose of these commentaries is two-fold: to explain, first the place of the discussed volume in the structure of the entire Biography; and to explain, secondly, the circumstances in which this volume came to be written, as well as the circumstances in which it was published: to explain, that is, the special functions and the special origins of each volume."--P. 3-4.
