"It would be a wayward biography all right, but I concluded to begin with a general description of the city for the benefit of those who had never seen her, and to write a preliminary chapter in the form of a short story to demonstrate how close California came to having a history of another sort and a lamentable one. After that was accomplished I wrote as the subjects occured to me. There is little continuity, and in some cases it may read like a memoir, for I had had personal contact with certain of those aspects and phases."--Preface.
