The 2nd work, a theme with seven variations based on the excerpt "Thou tun'st this world" from Purcell's work, was commissioned by BBC Music Magazine to mark its 10th anniversary. The composers, each of whom contributed one variation, are Colin Matthews (also arranged the theme), Judith Weir, Poul Ruders, David Sawer, Michael Torke, Anthony Payne, and Magnus Lindberg.
