- The plasma membrane of cells throughout the body lies at the interface between the inner workings of the cell and the extracellular environment. In response to stimulation by various growth factors, cytokines and neurotransmitters as well as in response to stressors, such as oxygen radicals, different membrane lipids are modified either enzymatically or non-enzymatically. The products of membrane phospholipids, sphingolipids and other lipids are released within the cell and mediate physiological responses to the stimuli. In this volume of Advances in Cell Aging and Gerontology leading experts in the field of membrane lipid signalling in relation to aging and age-related disease provide a comprehensive overview of the impact of aging on membrane lipid signalling and the role of such alterations in the aging process and age-related dysfunction and disease in various cell types throughout the body. It is increasingly recognized that alterations in membrane lipid metabolism contribute to the pathogenesis of diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. This book presents cutting-edge information on specific membrane lipids including cholesterol, inositol phospholipids, sphingolipids, ceramides and eicosanoids and their roles in cellular dysfunction and degeneration in aging and diseases of aging.
