- Summary:
- Journals or diaries written by Mrs. Farnham of Philadelphia of her family's travels in Europe. First volume describes leaving for Europe from Boston 11 Dec. 1849 and their stay in London, Devonshire, and Paris. She is accompanied by her husband, identified only as Mr. Farnham, sons Tom and Eddie, her sisters Kate and Margaret, and a servant Mary, and for some portion of the trip by the Appleton family. First volume includes copies of poems and inscriptions; newspaper clipping of the poem, "The Wedding Day; a list of quotations from the Bible; and a copy of a letter written by Mrs. Farnham to her cousin Mrs. Eben Dale of Boston on the death of the Dale's child George.
- Second volume of the journal begins in Lyon, France and the family travels through Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland before returning to Philadelphia (11 June 1850--12 Jan. 1851). She describes scenery, peasant costumes, museums, paintings, the opera in London with the singing of Sontag, letters from home, and her seasickness on the return journey. Signed L. R. F. at the end.
- Vol. 1 includes 6 plant specimens pressed between the pages; Vol. 2 includes approximately 65 plant specimens--wildflowers, leaves, and grass--collected by family members during the trip.
