- Summary:
- Culinary recipes for preserved meats, fruits, jellies, puddings, oysters, shad, jumbles, gingerbread, biscuits, plus a few medicinal and household recipes. A large proportion of the recipes are for preserving meats; for meat, game, and fowl dishes; and for oysters.
- Cookbook was evidently compiled in Philadelphia, Pa. with recipes attributed to several well-known Philadelphia women with surnames including Cadwalader, Emlen, Markoe, Physick, Clymer, Goodfellow, Hopkins, Chancellor, Gaskill, Picot, Roberts, Williams, Jackson, Churchman, Watson, Waln, Clapier, Willing, Swift, Pepper, Wister, and McElroy; plus Mary Welch and Mrs. Coleman Fisher. Included are Mrs. Cadwalader's recipe for Indian pickle and General Cadwalader's recipe for curing 400 lbs. of bacon; this recipe has been revised in a later hand. Compiler of the volume is not identified.

- Written mostly in one hand, with corrections and a few additional recipes in a later hand at the end of the volume. List of accounts of wages paid to household servants is dated 1841-1842, middle portion of this page has been cut out. Two recipes are dated 1861 and 1862, remainder are not dated and may be earlier or later than 1841-1862.
- Pagination: Table of contents (lacking first leaf) [i], 1-4, 11-56, 59-60, 83-106, 111-112, 115-124, [125-126? leaf is cut], [113]-114, [4 leaves unnumbered with recipes], 108 [leaf tipped in]. Page numbering in a near-contemporary hand, upper outer corner, in some cases on the verso only. Some leaves appear to be missing.
- Binding: contemporary half leather, marbled covers, spine repaired, some leaves partially detached, brittle.
