- This book combines the work of 21 authors from East and West, some of whom are residents of Jakarta and all of whom have studied there. The subjects they deal with range from conditions in VOC Batavia to particular national or ethnic communities to administrative developments. Consideration is also given to demography and urban morphology, environmental problems, traffic, floods, and ritual. Essays discuss the colonial period, recent history, and the present, drawing comparisons between the periods. Contributors include scholars in history, physics, geography, archeology, anthropology, language, sociology, and psychology. The book is distributed in the US by The Book Bin-Pacifica. c.
