Excerpt from introduction: "Constructing Image, Identity, and Place is volume IX of Perspectives in Vernacular Architecture, a biannual publication of papers drawn from annual conferences of the Vernacular Architecture Forum. Founded in 1980, the heart of this organization has always been its annual meetings. Comprised of two days of field tours and one of papers, these gatherings draw together a disparate group of practitioners and scholars who share an interest in the study of "common" buildings and places. This volume's essays are from meetings held in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1998 and Columbus, Georgia, the following year. Since papers dealing with local topics are encouraged at each meeting, there is some concentration evident in this volume on the mid-Atlantic and the Deep South regions of the country. Other contributions represent the broad range of topics and methodologies current in the field of vernacular studies. Consistent with the series' previous volumes, this work reveals vernacular scholarship to be defined less by what is being examined than by the method through which the built world is being investigated."
