Summary:
General audiences often encounter "great authors" on film and television, thanks to numerous adaptations of their best-known works. Thomas Hardy is one great author whose work has inspired filmmakers from the silent age to the present. Part One of this book analyzes the popular image of Hardy and his work, the reproduction of this image in film adaptations, and critical stereotypes about him and his fiction. Part Two considers Schlesinger's Far from the Madding Crowd, Polanski's Tess, and Winterbottom's Jude against the Hardy novels. Each discussion of novel and adaptation looks at the novel itself, the critical history of the novel, how it has been adapted to film, and how the filmmaker has struggled with problems inherent in Hardy's fiction. Part Three analyzes lesser known adaptations of The Woodlanders, The Scarlet Tunic, and The Claim, and four television movies and miniseries that were based on Hardy's work. An appendix lists "lost" adaptations from 1913 through 1953.
