Summary:
As the first European professional woman writer, born in Venice and raised at the court of Charles V of France, Christine de Pizan (c. 1365-1430) composed texts on a remarkable array of subjects including poetry, biography, philosophy, religion, and politics. Initially regarded by scholars as a curious anomaly, Christine's works are now seen to offer pivotal insight into the turbulence of fifteenth-century France. In this volume, Barbara K. Altmann and Deborah L. McGrady have assembled fifteen distinguished scholars who shed new light on Christine's writings and contributions to late medieval culture. Drawing upon historical context, feminist readings, close literary analysis and aspects of codicology and critical reception, the essays herein illuminate Christine's well-known texts, including the Querelle de la Rose and the Livre de l'advision Cristine, as well as the myriad facets of her life as author, advocate for women, translator, political philosopher, and the first French woman of letters. With a foreword by Charity Cannon Willard, the preeminent Christine scholar in the United States, Christine de Pizon: A Casebook is an inviting introduction for those new to Christine studies and a valuable reference for specialists in the field.
