- Calcium is the most versatile ion in biological systems, regulating processes as diverse as cell motility, gene expression, neurotransmitter release and energy metabolism. Accordingly, all cells contain a complex array of membrane calcium channels and pumps, calcium-binding proteins, and enzymatic targets of calcium. Perturbed cellular calcium homeostasis occurs in many different age-related diseases and, in many cases, is central to the pathogenic process. Many cellular signaling systems that regulate subcellular calcium levels, as well as downstream targets of calcium, are highly sensitive to processes of aging including oxidative and metabolic stress. Calcium Homeostasis and Signaling in Aging provides a comprehensive review of the role of calcium in aging and age-related disease. Background chapters describe evolutionary aspects of calcium signaling, mechanisms of calcium homeostasis and signaling, and neuroendocrine regulation of calcium metabolism.
