Summary:
Following the dismantling of apartheid in 1994, hopes ran high that Johannesburg would distinguish itself as sub-Saharan Africa's gateway into the world economy and serve as a driving force for the establishment of neo-liberal capitalist institutions throughout the region. However, despite the considerable progress the area has made in recent years, South Africa is still plagued by the same problems faced by other sub-Saharan states, namely devastating poverty, crime, violence, and AIDS. The first book to address the differences between apartheid and postapartheid Johannesburg and to treat the city in regional, national, and international contexts, Emerging Johannesburg explores the recent economic and political transformations that have defined and hindered the city in its development as a world player. Contributors address issues such as Johannesburg's urban/suburban divide and its relationship to poverty and socio-political power, local politics, AIDS, and the effect of postapartheid life on ordinary residents.
