- Summary:
- This long-overdue volume presents the first comprehensive examination of the paintings of Jan Miense Molenaer (ca. 1610 -- 1668), one of the masters of the Dutch Golden Age. Long overshadowed by his more famous wife, painter Judith Leyster, Molenaer is a key link between Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Jan Steen.
- Molenaer's early work consists of colorful genre paintings, portraits, and portrayals of the playful world of children, followed by a concentration on scenes of peasant life, all displaying an inventive symbolism and humor.
