A free adaptation and translation of: "Le roman de Renart", in prose; attributed by Wing to John Shirley (fl. 1680-1702), who published a version in heroic verse in 1681 with a slightly different title.
With title page woodcut and many illustrations.
Last five pages include table of contents, two pages of illustration (U2v, U4r), and final advertisment page.
Caption title: The pleasant history of Reynard the Fox.
Copy closely trimmed with slight loss of print; title page stained; MS. annotation on front flyleaf: "An edition of this book said to be the 'original' one, was valued in Lackinton, Allen, and Cos. General catalogue for the years 1808-9--page 644 at £1.4.0. But it could not be an original edition as this was printed 19 years before.--That mentioned in their catalogue being printed in 1681.--and what shall we say of Caxton's and Pynson's editions?".
