Summary:
Most children start school with enthusiasm and curiosity. Most parents want the best for their children. Most teachers are committed to supporting children's learning and are passionate about their subjects. Teachers become headteachers because they want to make a difference in young people's lives. Why then do some young people reject school and become excluded? This book provides policy-makers and practitioners with positive strategies for best practice, helping them to formulate and implement policies that will improve prospects for disaffected pupils. International studies show that educational attainment at 16 is the most important predictor of future participation in learning and labour market opportunities. Young people with no qualifications are more likely to be unemployed and to be excluded from society. Through a process of listening to young people, parents and teachers the authors encourage inclusive solutions that emphasise working in partnership. Their solutions are based on valid evidence and appropriate professional and academic constructs.
