- One of several states of the first edition. In this state there is no signed quire A, and the title page is conjugate with the engraved frontispiece. Variant 1 (CSmH copy only): the title page is conjugate with a special dedication to the Earl of Bridgewater; the frontispiece is pasted to the dedication verso.
- "The first booke of the crosse-staffe" (caption title; includes books 2 and 3) has separate pagination and register. Variant 2a: with an added title page to this section, "The description and vse of the crosse-staffe. .. London, printed by William Iones. and are to be sold by Iohn Tap at Saint Magnus corner. 1623.". Variant 2b: the added title page has E. Weaver's name for John Tap's. Several copies lack book 3 of this section.
