Summary:
The key book on its subject, this is an attempt to give a full and fair assessment of the battle of Courtrai in 1302, where untrained Flemish townspeople (common workers and peasants) destroyed the cream of French knighthood. As no impartial witnesses were present, gaining an accurate understanding of the events of that day has always been troublesome, but Verbruggen's careful study of the sources has resulted in an invaluable case study in the reconstruction of one of the greatest battles of the middle ages.
