This program traces the cultural history of Russia from the 17th century, covering the cultural role of the tsars, the building of St. Petersburg, the enthusiasm for France cut short by the Napoleonic invasion, the role of Pushkin and, above all, of Glinka, who expressed Russia's musical voice derived from church and folk traditions. Intercut with performance selections.
