- Summary:
- The Human Genome Project, which has provided a working draft of the sequence of DNA in the human genome, is a remarkable scientific achievement. In this "postgenomic" world, all genes and all DNA variations will eventually be known. For behavioral researchers, this is especially exciting, because behavioral dimensions and disorders are the most complex traits of all. To understand these traits, we need to understand the respective roles of multiple genes and multiple environmental influences.
- The goal of this book is to assess where we are and where we are going in genetic research on behavior. The editors have assembled an international group of distinguished contributors who assess progress and promise in both quantitative genetic analysis and molecular genetic analysis of behavior. Particularly significant is a new generation of genetic markers that has made it possible to identify genes for complex quantitative traits. These traits are influenced by multiple genes (QTLs) as well as by multiple environmental factors. The QTL perspective suggests that genetic variation is normal and has implications for thinking about mental illnesses, which has come to be seen as abnormal extremes of quantitative traits.
- The book focuses on those aspects of behavior about which behavioral genetics reveals the most. These include cognitive abilities and disabilities, personality, psychopathology, and psychopharmacology. The book will appeal not just to psychologists and psychiatrists but to anyone in the behavioral, biomedical, and biological sciences interested in the genetics of behavior. So great are the implications of behavioral genetics for the practice of psychology in the 21st century that the editors note, "Psychologists will eventually be in the business of preventing the consequences of gene expression."
