The present work, originally published in 1802 by the London bookseller Lackington, and issued by him in 24 editions, is a cheap pirated edition of Samuel Taylor's "Essay intended to establish a standard for an universal system of stenography, or short hand writing." The first two American editions were issued anonymously, Boston 1809 and 1810 respectively. Mangan's name was given to the 3d (1810) edition and to the subsequent ones because of some slight improvements which he made. The 4th edition appeared in 1818; the present edition, the 5th, issued in 1819, is the last known. cf. Beale, in Phonographic mag., v. 16 (1902) p. 160-164.
