Summary:

This biography describes and analyzes the journeys of John Oxley, the third Surveyor General of New South Wales, who undertook the earliest major expeditions west of the Great Dividing Range, believing the western-flowing rivers might lead him to a great Inland Sea. Oxley became a well-respected gentleman in the colony. He developed his extensive property Kirkham at Camden, NSW, and occupied several positions of responsibility in Sydney.
