Summary:
In 1997, journalist Peter Lovenheim bought a Happy Meal for his daughter at McDonald's and was surprised by the choice of Teenie Beanie Baby bonus toys: a cow named Daisy or a red bull named Snort. Finding it strange to see children receiving cuddly toy cows while they ate the grilled remains of real ones, Lovenheim pondered the disconnect between what we eat and our knowledge of where it comes from. Determined to understand the process by which living animals become food, he bought a pair of calves, and in this book he traces their passage from cute babies to mature cows who could be sent to the slaughterhouse at his whim. Rich in detail, this is a provocative exploration of the ethical and social issues surrounding the American diet.
