Summary:

These papers stem from an International African Institute seminar held at Rhodes University. Grahamstown, and they provide a wide-ranging collection of case studies concerning patterns of movement and settlement. They focus on the southern African region as it has moved from the experiments of the early independence era, through civil war and refugee flight, to the current situation characterised by globalisation and the demise of apartheid. These include the complex relationships between population mobility and settlement patterns, the impact of widespread and rapid change on policy formation, and a combination of theoretical and empirical analyses from across this region. This collection provides essential reading for anthropologists, geographers and sociologists who are interested in third world development studies.
