Summary:
In this thorough and well-researched text. Jeff Benton describes many of Montgomery's architecturally and historically significant churches, homes, public buildings, and business establishments. Accompanying the written descriptions are photographs by Jim Goodwyn that showcase each building, along with many important architectural details.
Benton uses the city's architectural heritage to explore broader social history. Technical information about construction methods is integrated with tales of the lives of both the builders and occupants, and their relationships with the wider community. Through an examination of the city's architectural environment, he helps his readers develop their own understanding of place, so that they acquire a broader and deeper feeling for Montgomery and Montgomerians.
These outstanding structures, some of which are antebellum, and all of which predate the city's post-World War II expansion, are arranged chronogically in more than seventy individual chapters. Placing each building into its stylistic context illustrates not only Montgomery's architectural history, but also its relationship with, and dependence upon, national trends.
Although each chapter can be read individually, and in any order, the chapters as a whole reveal much about Montgomery's spiritual, social, economic, and racial values; together they help the reader establish A Sense of Place.
