"The commentaries of Calderinus and Valla are printed throughout in successive sections distinguished by the letters DO. and VAL. in the margin. The 'Probus Birthius' mentioned in the title [i.e. leaf a1r] is the Probus whose scholia on Juvenal were discovered by Valla and who was identified by him with M. Valerius Probus (Berytius) the grammarian; the scholia are incorporated in Valla's commentary and the manner of their mention in the title is therefore misleading."--BM 15th cent.
