Summary:
Filmed largely in Pont-Aven (France) and focusing on the late nineteenth-century work of Gauguin, this program looks critically at contemporary ideas of the "modern" and the "primitive". The cultural and social environment of nineteenth-century Pont-Aven, the practices of resident artist Gauguin and his colleagues, as well as the sources and context of some of his subjects are all examined with reference to these ideas.
