Summary:
On 8 June 1999, on a quiet loch in the Scottish Highlands, three middle-aged peace activists disarmed the British Trident thermonuclear submarine fleet. Their act brought the world a giant step closer towards freedom from the threat of nuclear war, a threat which, some would argue, has increased since the events of 11 September 2001. As intended, it led to their arrest, and a trial that was watched around the globe. The women took their action in protest at the British government's failure to implement the landmark World Court judgement that ruled nuclear weapons illegal under international humanitarian law. In court they turned the tables on the government by accusing it of possessing illegal weapons of mass destruction. The story of their dramatic trial and its nailbiting conclusion is brought vividly to life by John Mayer, their lawyer. For the very first time, using the highest laws in the world -- the Nuremberg Principles and the reasoning of the World Court -- he had nuclear weapons ruled illegal.
