Summary:
In the celebrity-obsessed culture of the 21st century, an actor may be a film's public ambassador but it is, of course, the director who crafts its narrative, its style and its soul. Directors often also produce; many write the seript for a film, or if not will shape the existing words to suit their own vision; they work closely with the production designer who helps them to realise their visual concept; they choose the actors who are to be the vehicles of their ideas, and guide them to give their best possible performance; they communicate to the cinematographer how to capture the drama in the most effective way; and they oversee the composition of the musical score and the lengthy editing process. It is the ultimate collaborative job, but demands singular vision and broad management skills.
Film directors may have done more to shape and influence the popular culture of the 20th- and 21st centuries than any other artistie figures. Many have huge bodies of work, some have made fewer films, yet are just as significant. Where would we be without Hitchcock. Fellini. Ford. Kurosawa, Bergman or Kubrick? Or Polanski, Wenders. Lynch. Bertolucci and Forman? In an age where film remains the premiere popular art form, it is not surprising that the most inspired film-makers have inspired a thousand imitators, made a huge impact across cultures and even spawned their own adjectives.
Directing is the fifth title in the Screencraft series, a unique venture which aims to unravel the multi-layered language of film-making, by exploring each of the crafts which combine to make a film, through the eyes of some of its leading practitioners. The directors in this book are culturally, as well as artistically, diverse. They speak directly to the reader, allowing a rare insight into the mental and creative processes of the film director. The interviews are illustrated with storyboards, script excerpts, notebooks and film stills taken from their bodies of work.
