- Summary:
- Fiercer than Tigers: The Life and Works of Rex Warner details the personal and intellectual history of a literary legend of the 1930s and 1940s. His unique fictions The Wild Goose Chase (1937), The Professor (1938), and The Aerodrome (1941), remain powerful reflections on the turbulent politics of the period. As he grew increasingly disillusioned with the modern world, Warner turned to ancient myth via retellings and translations, the most famous of which, his Penguin Thucydides (1954), has sold nearly one million copies. Fiercer than Tigers explores the significance of Warner's work and details his friendships with contemporary Greek writers, including his work on the translation that contributed to poet George Seferis's Nobel Prize.
