Summary:
Reinhold Rucker Angerstein was an eighteenth-century industrial spy. He travelled widely in Europe in the 1750s, supported by the Swedish government, gathering information about trade and emerging technology. The diary of his trip to Britain is extraordinary for its quality of observation and insight, its comparative nature and the large number of detailed illustrations, which often provide a unique impression of eighteenth-century industrial operations and landscapes. The breadth of its coverage is astounding: coal, tin and copper mines, porcelain factories, iron foundries, smithies and workshops, rolling and slitting mills, chemical factories, water works, and many other areas of manufacturing, as well as agriculture.
Angerstein's surviving notebooks and a fair copy of the diary are in the archives of Jernkontoret, the Swedish Steel Producers' Association. This English-language translation provides, for the first time, Angerstein's work in accessible form. It is an outstanding resource for historians.
Torsten Berg, a Swedish-born engineer and industrial historian who settled in Britain in the 1940s, began the translation in 1970, but the work remained unfinished before his untimely death eight years later. His son, Peter, a science graduate who worked in industry and radio, completed the translation in 1999, drawing on help and advice from specialists in many fields.
