Violinist, former associate concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, former member of the All-American Youth Orchestra.
Summary:
Madison discusses his musical training with Leopold Auer; his memories of the Philadelphia Orchestra as a young Stokowski fan; Stokowski's jealousy of concertmaster Mischa Mischakoff; Stokowski's manner of telling the orchestra what he wanted; Stokowski's working relationship with Arthur Judson; the Philadelphia Orchestra on tour in 1936; Stokowski's Bach transcriptions; and the 1940 and 1941 All-American Youth Orchestra tours.
Madison also discusses Stokowski's performances of music by Henry Cowell and Henry Eichheim; performing under Toscanini in Philadelphia; the relationship between Stokowski and Eugene Ormandy; free bowing; the larger viola made for Stokowski by Louis Condax; recording with Stokowski; a party in Hollywood with Stokowski and Gloria Vanderbilt and Stokowski's house in California.
