Place of Publication:
May 10, 1977.
Summary:
David Hall discusses Stokowski's recordings; his memory of Stokowski's rehearsals and performances; and the 'Stokowski sound' with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the NBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Youth Orchestra. He compares the sound to rehearsal and performance tapes made of Koussevitsky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra and to acetate recordings made of Toscanini for NBC. He remembers Stokowski programming Bill Schuman's Prayer in Time of War and Stokowski asking Schuman to conduct it on the spot; he also remembers Schuman conducting Undertow with the Louisville Symphony Orchestra for Mercury Records.
Hall discusses Stokowski's transcriptions, his preparations for conducting, and his score markings; and remembers two occasions when he and his wife socialized with Stokowski, once at Stokowski's and Gloria Vanderbilt's home. Hall mentions Rachmaninoff, Ormandy, Ansermet, Monteux, Cowell, Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Steuermann, Karajan, Krips, Walter, Josten, Beecham, Frank Martin, Charles Farnsley, Bob Blake, Charles O'Connell, Ralph Shapey, Dick Leonard, J. B. Neumann, John Finley Williamson and the Westminster Choir, and others.
