- Summary:
- Serebrier talks about his musical upbringing in South America and impressions of conductors Erich Kleiber and Fritz Busch; stories about the All-American Youth Orchestra performing in Montevideo, Uruguay; an anecdote about Toscanini conducting in Montevideo; Serebrier's time as a student at the Curtis Institute of Music; and his first meeting with Stokowski when Stokowski conducted Serebrier's Symphony no. 1.
- He discusses what he learned from Stokowski's ability to create a unique sound in rehearsals, his preparation for rehearsal; his choice of musicians for an orchestra; his modesty; conducting the American Symphony Orchestra; performing Ives' Symphony no. 4; his social relationship with Stokowski; touring Europe with Stokowski; Stokowski conducting the Royal Philharmonic at age 91. Serebrier mentions Dorati, Monteux, Carvalho, Wallenstein, Fausto Cleva, Bernstein, and Szell, as well as Rudolf Serkin, Ruggiero Ricci, David Katz, Vladimir Horowitz, Gunther Schuller, and others.
