Born in 1905; manager Philadelphia Orchestra; assistant general manager Metropolitan Opera; died 1988.
Summary:
Allen discusses his parents' relationship with Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra and his earliest memories of Stokowski on board ship to Europe in 1913 with Alfred Hertz. Allen discusses his own career in advertising with the Victor Talking Machine Company and N.W. Ayer; his work as manager of the Philadelphia Orchestra after Arthur Judson left; his working relationship with Stokowski; the Orchestra's transcontinental tour; his translation of the libretto of Berg's Wozzeck; and an anecdote about helping Greta Garbo avoid the press on a trip to California. He mentions Harry Batten, Phil Beard, Sophia Yarnall Jacobs, Olga Samaroff Stokowski, Stokowski's daughter Sonya, Stokowski's secretary Miss McGinty, and Stokowski's performance of Varèse's Amériques at the Academy of Music of Philadelphia.
Daniel's research notes include photcopies of 11 items from Stokowski to Allen, 1917-1938, and proof sheets from Philadelphia Orchestra programs written by Allen, Folders 4-7.
