Summary:
Cohn discusses Stokowski's tenure with the Philadelphia Orchestra including his introduction of youth concerts there; Stokowski's Bach transcriptions and Lucien Cailliet's contribution to them; Stokowski's love of chamber music including his request for a private performance of the Shostakovich Piano Quintet; his programming of contemporary music by Shostakovich, Cowell, Berg, Webern, Varèse, Josten, Riegger, and others; Stokowski's rehearsals of the orchestra; the rehearsals for Berg's opera Wozzeck and Mary Louise Curtis Bok's funding of the opera; and the Band of Gold, a brass orchestra formed by Stokowski, who transcribed the music for the group.
Cohn also discusses his own career in Philadelphia as curator for the Fleischer Collection at the Free Library of Philadelphia, as director of Settlement Music School, and as a performer. He mentions his work Kaddish for orchestra which he composed in response to a request from Stokowski for a short orchestral work.
