Biography/History:
The English architect William Butterfield, an early proponent of "constructional polychromy," completed much of his work under the patronage of the Ecclesiological Society and its supporters. His major works include All Saints, Margaret Street (1850-1863) and Keble College, Oxford (1870-1877). Butterfield's many designs for the Rugby School, Warwickshire, were executed over a period of about 26 years beginning in 1858. Flamboyant in their polychromy of brick and stone, his New Schools and Big School are counterpoints to the Temple Reading Room and Art Gallery, where polychromy is subdued in the effort to minimize distraction from the processes of reading and looking at art. This resulted in an emphasis on the ceilings -- a situation unique in Butterfield's works.
Summary:
The collection comprises four contract drawings for the Temple Reading Room and Art Gallery at the Rugby School, signed by T.W. Jex Blake (Headmaster 1874-1887) and John Parnell and Son (builders from Rugby who worked for Butterfield at the School). Drawings include the Ground Floor Plan, no. 3; First Floor Plan and Attic Plan, no. 4; South Elevation and East Elevation, no. 6; and Two Sections and Details of Flooring and Marble Piers, no. 9.
