Summary:

With the publication of her first novel in 1989, The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan was immediately recognized as a major contemporary novelist who has written poignantly of her traumatic experiences as a child of Asian-American immigrant parents. Upon the death of both her elder brother and father in 1967, Amy and her younger brother were taken to Europe by their mother in order to remove the evil curse on their home in Santa Clara. When she returned to the United States and began a doctoral program at Berkeley, she was beset by another tragedy in the loss of her best friend. Her turning point occurred when she became a technical writer and realized that writing about her experiences could help others. While she resists being labeled an expert on Asian-American mother/daughter relationships, her work has received a great deal of attention and acclaim from feminist critics. Indeed, her work is very much concerned with issues of matrilineage and the ultimate triumph over female victimization.
