Summary:
On the morning of September 11, 1973, the presidential palace of Salvador Allende was attacked by military forces led by General Pinochet. The first Marxist ever elected to govern a country in a free, open and democratic election was overthrown in one of Latin America's bloodiest coups. Who was Salvador Allende? What support did his government have? Why did the United States actively participate in Allende's overthrow? These questions are directly addressed by Allende in this selection of his major speeches and writings, published in English for the first time. The publication of this book coincides with both the 30th anniversary of Allende's election as president in 1970 as well as the ongoing spotlight on the coup in Chile with the trial of General Pinochet in England and Spain for human rights violations.
