Summary:
Examines specific stereotypes in detail: loyal Toms, carefree Sambos, faithful mammies, grinning coons, savage brutes, and wide-eyed pickaninnies to trace the deeply-rooted stereotypes which have fueled anti-black prejudice throughout American history. The documentary interweaves minstrel shows, greeting cards, advertisements, popular songs, cartoons, films and household artifacts showing caricatured blacks with wooly hair, swollen lips, and bulging eyes, shuffling, dancing and attending to whites with grateful servility. Links each stereotype to the dominant white society's shifting needs to justify black oppression.
