- Edmund C. Tarbell (1862-1938) was a major painter of his era, extremely influential as a teacher in Boston and leader of the avant-garde. Trained in Paris, he helped bring Impressionism to America. Under the influence of Vermeer, he later turned to gracious and atmospheric interiors, many including beautiful, stylish women. His oeuvre also includes portraits, still lifes, and landscapes.
