- Summary:
- This book is the first collection of essays to address postmodernism from a decidedly musicological point of view. What makes music "postmodern"? How should we consider such music in relation to other music, and in relation to other postmodern art forms? Though literature, architecture, film, and cultural studies have all enjoyed extended postmodernist critiques, music has experienced a relative neglect, even while so many popular artists of the last decade, such as Beck and Bjork, have utilized postmodern concepts and techniques. Postmodern Music/Postmodern Thought includes discussions of these performers as well as composers of concert music and jazz, and broaches such topics as theoretical foundations, the "high style/low style" dichotomy, and the use of postmodern music in visual media.
