Summary:
Pioneering naturalist and evolutionist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) has long been overshadowed by his contemporaries Charles Darwin and Thomas H. Huxley. His scientific contributions, however, remain considerable. Independent of Darwin, Wallace developed a theory of evolution through natural selection, which ultimately spurred Darwin to complete and publish On the Origin of Species. He also discovered Wallace's Line, the boundary line separating the Asian and Australian zoological regions, and his studies of the distribution of plants and animals pioneered an evolutionary approach to global and island biogeography. The Alfred Russel Wallace Reader introduces Wallace's searching intelligence and lively insights to a general readership. For this collection, editor Jane R. Camerini has selected writings that reveal Wallace's superb skills as a field biologist and travel writer. They display his roving interests in a diverse array of subjects, from evolution to spiritualism, and focus on his scientific expeditions in Wales, the Amazon, and the Malaysia Archipelago.
