Summary:
Iatrogenic harm is a term that describes the damage induced in a patient by any caregiver (teacher, physician, social worker, judge) in the course of professional intervention where the declared intention is to prevent psychosocial disorders. The authors have collected case studies and observational accounts of caregivers for over fifteen years and it is expected that this book will be quite controversial in nature. Iatrogenic harm is a serious and widespread problem that many have been reluctant to speak out about for fear of being blacklisted by their colleagues. The authors see a lack of knowledge, empathy, and objectivity as the dangers of well-intentioned caregivers. In writing this book they hope to establish guidelines that will help caregivers to recognize and deal with potentially harmful behavior thereby improving the standards of care for all patients.
