Summary:
In November 1999 more than 50,000 people and 700 organizations demonstrated in Seattle against the World Trade Organization's new round of closed-door trade talks that govern the global economy. Dubbed the 'Battle of Seattle,' the event marked the beginning of a new era of outrage. Followed by further massive protests in Washington DC, Prague, Brazil, Quebec City, and Genoa, it quickly became clear that young people especially were not prepared to let the tyrannies of the 21st century go unchallenged.
In a world of mounting turmoil and violence, the need to understand the sources of increasing discontent at a global level has never been greater. Global Uprising gives voice to more than sixty activists who are deeply concerned with the roots of this violence, and who are all standing up against it. Whether they are calling for economic equality or women's rights, opposing police brutality or sweatshop labor, denouncing old-growth forest destruction or biotechnology, the activists featured in this book speak with conviction and from the heart.
Through striking photographs and compelling first person stories from both young and more seasoned players, you'll learn what is at stake, and why. Visually and emotionally powerful, Global Uprising captures the spirit and passion of youth activism. Packed with resources and links, it is essential reading for all who care about the state of the world today -- and tomorrow.
