Summary in Danish.
Summary:
Why do West Africa's Woodabe men use mirrors and make-up? Why do the Woodabe hold beauty parades for men? What is the meaning of their elaborate cultivation of beauty in make-up, tattoos, body paintings, calabash carvings, embroideries, and architecture? And why are they often misunderstood by outsiders? The answers are provided in this book by anthropologist Mette Bovin.
The author does not see Woodabe dances and visual arts as exotic, but as spaces for social action and identity politics. An emphasis is placed on the gendered aspects of social life and identity construction. Beauty and existence are linked.
