Louis Kahn (1901-74) was one of the 20th century's most influential architects. His dramatic, often almost aggressively stark buildings continue to inspire designers throughout the world. The Yale University Art Gallery (1951-53) and the Richards Medical Research Building of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (1957-61) were amongst the first manifestations of Brutalism and seminal works in the history of modern architecture. Kahn's most important later works include the First Unitarian Church, Rochester, New York (1959-67), the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, California (1959-65) and designs for the new capital in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1962-74).
