Summary:
This collection of original essays examines various ways in which cultural trends and social developments have influenced each other in modem German history. Each contribution explores some aspect of either "high" (elite) or "low" (popular) culture and its societal ramifications. A thoughtful introduction draws together many of the common themes and important questions raised in the individual studies: the interplay of ideas and social forces in German history; the response of the German elite to the emergence of modern social relations and mass culture; and the relation between elite and popular culture.
The individual contributions and their authors are "Preface," Gary D. Stark and Bede Karl Lackner; "Introduction," Leonard Krieger; "Culture and Society in Modern Germany: A Summary View," David B. King; "The Wise Man's Burden: The Role of Academicians in Imperial German Culture," Charles E. McClelland; "Kultur and Its Discontents: The Origins of a 'Critique of Everyday Life' in Germany, 1880-1925," David L. Gross; "Irony and Rage in the German Social Novel: Theodore Fontane and Heinrich Mann," Gordon A. Craig; "Cinema, Society, and the State: Policing the Film Industry in Imperial Germany," Gary D. Stark; and "Songs and Nazis: Political Music and Social Change in Twentieth-Century Germany," Vernon L. Lidtke. 240 pp. $ 19.50s Book jacket.
