Summary:
The Torsten Brohan Collection, acquired in toto by the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas, Madrid, in 1999, contains some of the finest examples of early modern glass in the world. This beautifully illustrated volume documents more than 200 objects from Brohan's comprehensive collection of Austrian, Bohemian and German glass.
The collective output of the Middle European centers of glass production demonstrates a thoroughly modern approach to the craft. While most other histories of modernism focus on the primacy of pure form, Glass of the Avant-Garde chronicles the use of ornament, in a wide variety of styles and techniques, by early twentieth-century designers.
The catalogue's appendix, with its table of marks, is especially valuable for collectors and experts, while its stunning color plates and informative texts provide a excellent introduction to modern glass for anyone interested in the field.
