Summary:
This is an account of one woman's Holocaust survival and of her painful postwar years spent forging an adult identity out of the splinters of a girlhood destroyed. Edith Brooke, the youngest daughter of a poor Jewish family, was separated from all but her sister when she was transported from Hungary to Auschwitz at age 12. Brooke survived three concentration camps in one year and recounts her experiences in spare, straightforward language that is all the more powerful for its directness. She chronicles her adjustment to life after the examination camps and her disappointment in the racism, impatience, and hatred she continues to see around her -- often within her own family. After the war, she travels to Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany, and finally to Israel in search of a place where she will belong.
